DESCRIPTION This study-units provides students with basic knowledge in paediatrics, geriatrics and orthodontics as applied to individuals with communication difficulties. Course outlines in paediatrics, geriatrics and orthodontics are indicated below:

Paediatrics:
Common paediatric issues including those related to infectious diseases, cardiovascular system, respiratory system and central nervous system, infant feeding and so forth will be discussed during the study-unit. Accidents and non-accidental injury and related challenges are also discussed. An introduction to services offered at the Child Development Assessment Unit will be provided. The study-unit outline includes aspects of paediatrics related to:
- The New born baby;
- Normal Development;
- Down Syndrome;
- Cerebral Palsy;
- Spina Bifida;
- Muscular Dystrophy;
- Autism;
- Behavioural challenges.

Geriatrics:
The study-unit covers theoretical aspects related to the:
- Ageing population;
- Characteristic medical problems affecting the elderly;
- Medical rehabilitation and the multidisciplinary team;
- The role of the speech-language pathologist in the care of the elderly;
- ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ for the elderly;
- Medical conditions common in the elderly;
- Students are also engaged in field work and case conferences.

Orthodontics:
The lectures provide knowledge related to the following issues:
- Fundamentals of Orthodontics;
- Classification and grading of malocclusions;
- Dentofacial Syndromes in relation to orthodontics;
- Reasons for orthodontic treatment in children and adults; - Different oral appliances utilised in orthodontic treatment;
- Examples of malocclusion treatable by orthodontics alone or in conjunction with jaw surgery;
- The team management of children with orofacial dysmorphias, with special reference to individuals with cleft lip and/or palate ; and- The relation of malocclusion (and treatment) to communication disorders and respective intervention.

Study-Unit Aims:

This unit aims to provide students with a basic application of paediatrics, geriatrics and orthodontics to disorders of communication.

Paediatrics:
- To enable students to become familiar with common paediatric issues facing children with neuro-developmental problems;
- To enable students to become confident with the most prevalent conditions leading to intellectual and physical disabilities and to related communication problem in children;
- To train students in basic paediatric principals with a special emphasis on Communication Disorders and Intellectual Disabilities.

Geriatrics:
To introduce the students to the speciality of Geriatric Medicine and to the unique challenges faced by the elderly and their management.

Orthodontics:
To provide students with basic knowledge on orthodontics, particularly in relation to malocclusions and prosthodontic considerations especially in children with craniofacial anomalies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply basic knowledge in paediatrics, geriatrics and orthodontics to respective individuals with communication difficulties.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Deal with clients with communication disorders that also fall within the responsibility of allied health care professionals such as paediatricians, geriatricians and orthodontists. The speech language pathologist’s role in the multidisciplinary team of such clients is recognised.
