DESCRIPTION Students are expected to engage in a small scale independent research study under the supervision of a supervisor/s. A team of academic members of staff serves the role of a research panel. The latter reviews topics and proposals for research projects in terms of feasibility. When the proposed study is approved each student will work closely with the supervisor/s to write a detailed proposal.

Feedback is shared with the students and a set of phases commences, including regular meetings with the supervisor, an application for ethics approval, critical appraisal of related literature, selection of and justification for research methodology, data collection and analysis, reflection and discussion of the findings. The students are expected to produce a write up including the following components: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study unit aims to provide students with an opportunity to engage in a research project under the supervision of an academic supervisor. As a result, the students will:

- identify the area of investigation;
- review scientific sources of information and appraise the literature;
- develop a set of research questions;
- design the methodology;
- collect the data;
- analyse the data using valid and reliable methods;
- integrate the findings with already available literature;
- specify methodological limitations;
- make conclusions and recommendations;
- enable students to adhere to a set time frame for completion of the project and write up.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate an understanding of the research process;
- appreciate ethical behaviour and data protection issues;
- describe different research methodologies;
- appraise available literature with a critical eye;
- describe different forms of validity and reliability in research;
- compare and contrast the study findings with other scientific research;
- present a written report of the research process.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- conduct a small scale research project;
- explore different methodologies and apply the relevant study design to the specific study;
- carry out research in a set time frame;
- abide by high ethical standards of practice;
- appraise available literature and reflect on research findings;
- work independently while following the guidance of a supervisor;
- write a full report explaining the different phases of the research in the format of a research paper, including the following sections/components: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion.
