DESCRIPTION Students need to engage in an empirical research study under supervision. A student’s dissertation will comprise a literature review, data collection and analysis and the writing up of a manuscript to report rigorously the research study, results and a relevant discussion including limitations of the study and recommendations for further research. Students may select any topic related to their Masters course and must justify the need for the study, demonstrate that the work is novel and provide evidence that a knowledge gap exists.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of the study unit is to provide the students with an opportunity to engage in a research exercise under the supervision of an academic supervisor. This would include: preparing a research proposal; carrying out a literature review; conducting and reporting an empirical study; preparing a paper for publication in a peer reviewed journal.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Successfully compile a research proposal and demonstrate an in depth understanding of their chosen research topic and method(s).
- Demonstrate an ability to critically review relevant literature and organising their collected research data.
- Appreciate effective ways of presenting research results and findings
- Analyse and discuss research data adequately
- Write a paper for publication

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Intellectual skills
- Evaluate and demonstrate the relevance of other researchers’ findings to the presented work.
- Demonstrate an appreciation of, and analyze ethical issues in research within this field and respond to them appropriately.
- Evaluate their chosen methodological approach.
- Present, defend and debate findings

Practical skills
- Plan and manage a research project
- Present information in a succint, accurate and logical way
- Produce a completed research dissertation

Transferable skills
- Engage confidently in academic and professional communication with others
- Reflect on the quality of their work
- Use computer-based software and techniques effectively

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
