DESCRIPTION This study-unit comprises the learning and practising of basic helping skills that can be used in voluntary situation. During the course of studies students will be exposed to the different basic helping skills and given opportunity to practise the skills. These will include acitve listening, empathy, reflecting, summarizing and problem solving. The assignment will be a workbook that links theories studied with practice.

Study-unit Aims:

1. Offer students the possiblity to learn and practise basic counselling skills in a safe environment;
2. Enable reflexivity through observation of the different reactions to the skills;
3. Give opportunity to the students to practise communication skills within a group.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Understand issues around basic communication skills and how clients problems can be communicated;
2. Reflect on meanings behind thoughts and feelings demonstrated by clients;
3. Analyze responses through basic communication theories in the assignment.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate and practise helping skills including active listening, empathising, summarising, reflecting, and advanced accurate empathy;
2. Demonstrate skills in the creation of a helping relationship with clients;
3. Display skills in setting up achievable goals with clients.
