| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to introduce students to the transcultural curriculum according to national and international research-based best practice. This study-unit will combine experiential and theoretical approaches, providing students with an understanding of the cultural context for therapeutic relationships. It will cover current issues and trends including identity, counselling theories strategies and techniques, advocacy in counselling practice, cultural social justice, conflict resolution and the counsellors’ role in promoting diversity and combatting prejudice and discrimination Study-Unit Aims: - To introduce internationality and pluralistic trends, including characteristics, power differentials and concerns within and among diverse groups; - To identify attitudes, beliefs, understandings, and acculturative experiences, including specific experiential learning activities designed to foster students’ understanding of self and culturally diverse clients; - To discuss theories of transcultural counselling and cultural identity development; - To discuss counsellors’ roles in developing cultural self-awareness, promoting cultural social justice, and advocacy; - To identify counsellors’ roles in addressing biases, prejudices, and processes of intentional and unintentional oppression and discrimination. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss theories relating to transcultural counselling and identity development; - Identify culturally appropriate strategies, interventions, and techniques in their counselling practice; - Identify personal implicit beliefs and values and discuss how these can impact on the counselling practice; - Describe the counsellors’ role in the promotion of cultural social justice, advocacy, and conflict resolution. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate self-awareness in the development of transcultural practice; - Demonstrate a developing cultural humility; - Demonstrate a critical reflection on practice in line with contemporary research on transcultural counselling.
