DESCRIPTION | Throughout the counselling process, assessment is used as a basis for identifying problems, planning interventions and evaluating client progress. This study-unit is designed to introduce students to the concept of assessment in counselling. Students will gain practical understanding and experience in the collection of information in order to identify, analyse, evaluate, and address the problems, issues, and circumstances of clients in the counselling setting, within a cultural context. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to introduce students to the practice of assessment for counselling purposes. This study-unit will combine experiential and theoretical approaches. Students will gain practical understanding and experience of how information presented within the therapeutic relationship can be utilised efficiently to enhance the counselling relationship and process. Students will learn to combine skills and knowledge gained throughout their course to develop culturally appropriate strategies, and interventions which meet the specific needs of their clients. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the use of assessment in counselling; - Implement and interpret different assessment methods; - Compare and contrast the theoretical and historical perspectives concerning the nature and meaning of assessment; - Identify issues related to the use of assessment with different populations; - Identify the cultural, ethical and practical issues associated with the use of assessment in counselling; - Establish assessment based client appropriateness for counselling; - Discuss and apply different appraisal methods, basic concepts of standardised and nonstandardised testing and other assessment techniques. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate the ability to select appropriate assessment practices; - Demonstrate the ability to implement appropriate assessment practices; - Critically evaluate cultural issues associated with the implementation and use of assessment; - Discuss appropriate and effective ways of communicating the understandings, resulting from the assessment, to clients and other professionals; - Critically evaluate strategies for selecting and interpreting assessment and evaluation instruments and techniques in counselling; - Critically appraise the selection of appropriate comprehensive assessment interventions demonstrating an awareness of cultural bias in the implementation and interpretation of assessment protocols.
