DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to provide an opportunity for students to pursue a topic of their own choice in the field of supervision in counselling. The chosen topic will be studied in depth, based on current research, and with examples of reflective practice from the student’s experience.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to introduce students to the conceptualisation and carrying out of an extended and in-depth investigation of an area of study of their choice in relation to counselling supervision and reflective practice. The unit aims to encourage independent study on a chosen topic according to national and international research-based best practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate an in-depth and critical understanding of research in counselling supervision;
- evaluate existing literature associated with the selected topic;
- demonstrate an appropriate depth of understanding of the specific topic;
- reflect upon and critically analyse relevant theories and existing research material;
- demonstrate an appropriate level of knowledge of the approach employed;
- demonstrate a clear understanding of the main concepts;
- critically reflect upon all aspects of the writing process;
- make recommendations for future counselling supervision practice.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate critical thinking in choosing an appropriate topic and applying that thinking to recent practice;
- search the relevant literature strategically and systematically;
- demonstrate a critical reflection on practice in line with contemporary professional literature on counselling supervision.
