DESCRIPTION The study-unit comprises 375 practicum hours and aims to give the opportunity to trainee counsellors to demonstrate their transcultural counselling skills and competence as they engage in counselling work with clients and continued group growth, personal and professional development, and role play exercises during supervision. Trainees will also have sessions in small groups to discuss, process and analyse the diverse issues that might impinge on their work as counsellors. Trainees may be asked to engage in a variety other exercises including: reflective work, analysis of transcripts and personal analysis to help sharpen their skills. Particular emphasis will be placed on knowledge and skills to engage in reflective practice. Trainees' development of their observation and reflective skills will be a primary focus of this study-unit. In order to help trainees to develop both a personal and professional level ongoing feedback will be facilitated through group and individual supervision. Continued group growth and emphasis on personal and profesional development will address reflective and self-growth, competencies crucial to the Counselling Profession.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit will give trainee counsellors the opportunity to further develop, enhance and integrate their knowledge of theories, skills and research as they engage in supervised practice with a variety of clients populations. This study-unit will include:

- Observations of practical, virtual and/or actual counselling situations;
- On-site observations in selected practicum locations;
- Supervised role-play exercises;
- Direct client work;
- Group and/or individual supervision and group growth;
- Continued group gowth and personal and Professional development;
- Reflection on audio recordings of their counselling practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss and critique counselling skills;
- Demonstrate an underestanding of a varied repertoire of interactions with clients;
- Conceptualise client concerns;
- Identify personal characteristics needed to be an effective counsellor;
- Discuss ethical and legal issues in counselling as applied in the practicum setting;
- Explain theoretical basis for counselling strategies;
- Discuss transcultural issues as they relate to counselling clients of varying social/cultural/ethnic backgrounds;
- Discuss crisis intervention strategies;
- Explain and Discuss professional conduct as presented in the Practicum handbook;
- Discuss the MACP Code of Ethics and the Counselling act;
- Demonstrate knowledge of all laws, code of ethics and other regulations and mandates set forth by the setting that governs professional counselling services and professional conduct;
- Discuss the content of the Practicum Handbook.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Write case notes, court notes and records;
- Demonstrate referral skills;
- Demonstrate advanced counselling skills such as immediacy;
- Demonstrate how the counselling relationship can be used to foster client growth;
- Demonstrate crisis intervention strategies;
- Utilise appropriate laws and other regulations and mandates that govern professional counselling services and professional conduct;
- Develop and present a client contract;
- Demonstrate the responsibilities expected of a professional counsellor;
- Demonstrate confidentiality and boundaries.

ADDITIONAL NOTES It is the student's responsibility to participate in all the required supervision sessions and to familiarise themselves and adhere to the practicum and supervision handbook. Due to the nature of this study-unit and the profile of a counsellor, students must obtain an obligatory pass (55%) in each assessment component, for an overall obligatory pass mark (55%) to be awarded.
