TITLE Practicum 2

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Counselling

DESCRIPTION This study-unit makes up the second part of the trainees’ practicum journey. Trainees will be required to engage in a further 125 hours of practicum which will include personal and professional development sessions, observations, role-plays, client engagement, supervision and group growth, and reflections. Trainees will begin to broaden their client base and practicum experience through engagement with a diverse range of practicum locations. Trainees will continue to meet for regular supervision in small groups to discuss, process and analyse the diverse range of issues that might impinge on their work as counsellors. Students’ client engagement, competencies, skills and knowledge application will be assessed through case presentations during supervision sessions.

Study-Unit Aims:

In this study-unit, trainees will have the opportunity to broaden their client base and gain a wider range of experience across a diverse range of approved practicum locations. During this study-unit trainees will engage in role-play exercises, group and/or individual supervision and group growth, audio/visual recording and processing of sessions. The study-unit also aims to provide on-going and direct feedback to trainees through thorough and constant group and individual supervision. The combination of client engagement and supervision is an opportunity for trainees to both develop and demonstrate their reflexivity and competencies and enhance their practical skills. Trainees will be under intense supervision and supervisors may require trainee counsellors to do various exercises including, but not limited to, direct observation, reflective work, analysis of transcripts and personal analysis in order to enhance their professional development.

During this study-unit, trainees will attend sessions which will focus on the personal, professional and group development of the cohort. Students will have the opportunity to take part in group development sessions and address personal and group themes like conflict and conflict management, difference, relationships with authority, change and resistance to change. Personal and group development is vital to the formation of competent counselling professionals and helps develop a reflexive attitude in practice and research. Students will be required to keep a reflexive journal throughout the course.
