DESCRIPTION The study-unit covers a wide range of topics related to contemporary crime and counter-terrorism, focusing on relevant legislation, key concepts, and operational strategies.

Legislation and guidance associated with contemporary crime are discussed, including various types of offenses such as pickpocketing, property crime, hate crime, homicide, corruption, environmental crime, prostitution, organized crime, economic crime, and illegal drugs. Specific attention is given to the recreational cannabis amendment, covering aspects like cultivation.

The study-unit delves into illegal drugs and substances of abuse, addressing identification methods for substances like cocaine and methadone, as well as aspects of importation, cultivation, legislation, manufacturing, trafficking, possession, personal use, and search and seizure procedures.

Relevant legislation and powers related to search, arrest, and detention concerning terrorism are examined, along with key concepts of countering terrorism, including radicalization, extremism, interventions, terror-related offenses, and national and international threat levels.

The role and functions of the counter-terrorism unit are outlined, emphasizing its investigative and operational functions in combating terrorism. Additionally, the importance of community engagement and intelligence in counter-terrorism operations is highlighted, discussing strategies such as fostering cooperation, developing intelligence through community engagement, raising awareness of online presence, and encouraging the identification and reporting of suspicious activity by the public.

Overall, the study-unit provides comprehensive coverage of contemporary crime and counter-terrorism, equipping learners with essential knowledge of relevant legislation, operational procedures, and strategic approaches to combatting various forms of criminal activities and addressing the threat of terrorism.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Legislation and guidance associated with contemporary crime, including different forms of property crime, crimes against the person, environmental, economic and organised crime;
- Legislation and guidance associated with illegal drugs and substances; including different forms of substances;
- Legislation and guidance associated with terrorism; including definitions of key concepts, powers of search, arrest and detention and importance of community engagement and intelligence in counter-terrorism operations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain key definitions, legislation and guidance associated with contemporary crime;
- Recognise the impact on front line policing of illegal drugs and substances;
- Define key legislation and concepts relevant to countering terrorism;
- Demonsrtate an awareness of how counter-terrorism operations impact on front-line policing.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Address issues related to property crime, crimes against the person;
- Apply legislation within the context of environmental crime;
- Explain the context of Economic and Organized Crime;
- Address issues related to illegal drugs and substances.
