DESCRIPTION | The practical component, which will be delivered in its entirety by the Academy for Disciplined Forces (ADF), is designed to prepare police recruits for the diverse physical, tactical, and procedural demands of modern policing. Combining physical conditioning, operational drills, and legal and ethical foundations, the practical component is aimed to foster resilience, situational awareness, and professional judgment under pressure. Through scenario-based training and hands-on activities, participants will develop proficiency in safe weapon handling, use-of-force protocols, report writing, and first aid. Emphasis is also placed on effective communication using police radio procedures, the phonetic alphabet, and clear documentation through reports and affidavits. The practical component supports not only technical skill development but also self-discipline, teamwork, and personal well-being in a demanding work environment. Further details about the components which make up this study-unit will be made available to students by the ADF. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Articulate the legal and ethical framework governing the use of force, including the deployment of the Taser C.E.W; - Compose accurate reports, NPS entries, and affidavits, demonstrating clear, concise, and legally sound documentation; - Gain insight into operational policing through the work life practical, engaging in hands-on experience and job shadowing to observe and reflect on real-life duties, team dynamics, and the daily responsibilities of law enforcement professionals; - Understand and implement public order management strategies, ensuring safety and compliance in crowd control situations; - Respond effectively to dynamic situations using case scenarios and judgmental simulator exercises to enhance decision-making. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate physical readiness through structured fitness and circuit training tailored for law enforcement duties; - Exhibit self-discipline and coordination during drills, maintaining professionalism and composure under stress; - Apply appropriate control and restraint techniques, including safe use of handcuffs, batons, and OC (pepper) spray; - Operate and handle weapons safely, adhering to legal and procedural standards; - Perform basic fire-fighting techniques and understand workplace fire safety protocols; - Apply health and safety principles relevant to operational duties and personal well-being; - Use police radio systems effectively, including correct use of the phonetic alphabet for clear communication; - Administer first aid, CPR, and AED support, providing emergency care in line with current best practices. |
