ECTS CREDITS | 10 | ||||||
DEPARTMENT | Human Communication Sciences and Disorders | ||||||
DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will include lectures in advanced clinical science and technology, particularly electrophysiology of the auditory and vestibular system. Assessment, management and therapeutic re/habilitation of people with hearing and balance problems and associated disorders, are evaluated and discussed. Recent systematic reviews and evidence-based scientific articles will be the basis for group learning discussion. Study-unit Aims: This unit aims to expose the students to advanced principles of diagnostic audiology. Emphasis is given to the knowledge and skills required for differential diagnosis of auditory and vestibular disorders, such as interpretation of test results, referral decisions and techniques in re/habilitation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - have in depth knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the audio-vestibular system as well as genetics related to hearing loss; - manage individuals with all types and degrees of auditory and vestibular disorders (including auditory processing difficulties); specific emphasis on individuals with relevant complex conditions and comorbidity will be highlighted; - evaluate recent and relevant scientific publications relevant to audio-vestibular testing, differential diagnosis and management (particularly, systematic reviews and articles reporting meta analysis); - plan and manage re/habilitation programmes for individuals with hearing impairment (particularly those with co-morbid conditions, such as dementia or children with complex neurodevelopmental conditions) and their significant others; - learn the principles of collaborative practice in auditory and vestibular sciences. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - administer and interpret results of advanced audiological and vestibular tests; - differentiate between comorbid conditions; - consider speech and language acquisition, developmental milestones, cognitive skills as well as social interaction in differential diagnosis and management of children with hearing impairment and related disorders; - identify comorbidity (in both children and adults) and provide adequate management; - consider communication and psychosocial aspects in the management of individuals with auditory and vestibular disorders.
