TITLE ³§³Ù°ù³Ü³¦³Ù³Ü°ù²¹±ôÌý¶Ù±ð²õ¾±²µ²ÔÌý2

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Civil and Structural Engineering

DESCRIPTION Study-Unit Aims:

The objective of this study-unit is to introduce students to the structural design of compression elements, in particular masonry walls, piers, and reinforced concrete columns, and to introduce the principles and design methodology for steel compression elements and laterally unrestrained steel beams. The study-unit will introduce the theories of elastic instability, and the concepts of slenderness and imperfections that underpin the design of compression elements. It will outline current limit state approaches to structural design, and to Eurocodes.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- to identify functional behaviour of compression structural elements and unrestrained steel beams in simple buildings;
- to anticipate qualitatively the behaviour of structural components carrying compression forces and unrestrained steel beams subjected to bending moments.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- to assess the effect of compressive actions on slender compressive elements;
- to design masonry plane and curved elements carrying compression, in accordance with statutory standards;
- to design and detail reinforced concrete columns, in accordance with statutory standards;
- to design and detail steel columns and laterally unrestrained steel beams, in accordance with statutory standards.
