DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will develop and enhance students’ knowledge and experience of child rights. Although students may be familiar with the fundamental tenets of the rights of the child, jurisprudence, fresh legislation and policy continuously promote more extensive research into issues at the cutting edge of contemporary debate. Students will be encouraged to critique and respond to the interpretation and application of child rights from an informed standpoint, reaching their own inferences, and making a personal contribution to the field. Pertinent topics challenging notions of child participation, decision making, best interests, autonomy, protection, wellbeing, access to justice, and others will be examined and debated. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit will give students the opportunity to reflect on developments in the study of child rights from both a local and international perspective. They will be encouraged to share their informed opinion regarding the impact of changing attitudes to child rights and to review the application of that opinion and its efficacy, in relation to contemporary challenges in the field. Small group teaching will further empower the significant exchange of information between students and elicit meaningful participation. Learning Outcomes: 1.
