DESCRIPTION | The students will be exposed to different dance genres and styles, beyond their regular training patterns, through workshops which will join together theory and practice. UM staff or guest teachers will introduce a new style through its background, provide tools for analysis, and give the student the opportunity to try the style in their own bodies. The workshops will test current ideas and practices in dance-making, and purposely blur differences and hierarchies between dance genres and styles. Work will include writing, rehearsing and presentation of a group lecture-demonstration, explaining, analysing, and demonstrating a particular style. Study-unit Aims: The unit is designed to give the students an encounter with forms of dance other than their regular training provides (i.e. beyond classical ballet and contemporary dance), in line with current trends for global awareness in dance studies. This includes examination of a variety of dance styles in relation to different socio-cultural contexts; and framing of hegemonic dance practices as particular styles, offering different perspectives. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Examine different practices of dance within their socio-cultural contexts; - Identify and describe a variety of genres, styles, and practices of dance and dance-making; - Select and adapt dance techniques/movementes to different contexts. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Analyse, appraise, and demonstrate works or events of a range of genres and styles; - Critique, compare, and interpret different dance contexts and practices; - Work in a group for both research and performance.
