Study-Unit Description

CODE DGA2011

TITLE Visual Narrative

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Digital Arts

DESCRIPTION The Visual Narrative study-unit focuses on familiarising the student with such toolsets in Adobe After Effects to create complex sequential narratives through the use of images and words. It deals with the ordering and structure of images and animation sequences and related creative activities that start off as drawings in sketchbooks and storyboards and are carried through to eventual production in a variety of moving image forms.

Students are encouraged to experiment and to explore form and structure within the drawing medium in order to develop skills and techniques for creating material that communicates visually. Students will go through a series of activities that will demonstrate a conceptual, lateral and informed understanding and application of this knowledge, skillfully executed at pre-production stage and then develop this into a sequential animation work.

Study-unit Aims:

- To foster a structured methodology of translating textual concepts to visual images;
- To build confidence working in a professional digital animation environment;
- To have students visualise time-based animation from initial sketches to finished piece;
- Foster a culture of critical, self-reflection and peer evaluation.
