DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers the basics of oral pathology, medicine and surgery. It will focus in identifying the common features of oral lesions, common oral infections, differing features of benign and malignant lesions and their significance, and in their ability of recognising changes in oral tissues. This unit also prepares the students in their different roles in oral surgery, focusing on the basic knowledge of the instruments and surgical procedures.

Study-unit Aims:

The study unit aims at:
- providing an understanding of the dental assistants' role and responsibilities in professional health care settings in a surgical environment;
- provide the students with a basic knowledge of the features of common oral lesions and infections;
- introducing the student to the armamentarium used in oral surgery and the dental assistants' role in a surgical environment;
- introducing the student to the procedures performed in oral surgery;
- providing a foundation for assessing, planning, and implementing a proper surgical environment;
- providing an understanding of how pain is controlled and managed.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the roles and responsibilities of dental assistants in an oral surgery setting;
- Prepare the operatory for an examination and consultation visit;
- Understand the indications and contra-indications in oral surgery;
- Understand the main concepts of oral pathology, medicine and surgery;
- List the different instruments and their function in the oral surgery procedures;
- Discuss basic knowledge of different techniques in local anaesthesia, sedation and general anaesthesia.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the instruments and equipment used in oral surgery;
- Assist professionally in an oral surgery setting;
- Recognize the indications and contraindications in oral surgery;
- Provide basic preoperative and postoperative instructions to the patient;
- Demonstrate basic knowledge in the different procedures of oral surgery.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
