DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to the basic knowledge of dental imaging and radiography. It will focus on indications for radiography, familiarising the students with x-ray equipment, development and storage of images, and the principles of radiation protection. This unit will prepare students to carry out quality assurances and clinical audits of radiography in the clinic. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study unit are to: - Provide the student with an understanding of the dental assistant`s roles and responsibilities in dental radiography; - Provide the student with basic knowledge of X-ray equipment, X-ray generation, film processing and storage; - Introduce the student to basic knowledge of different views and techniques used in dental radiography; - Introduce the student to basic interpretation of radiographic images; - Help the student develop skills in assessing the quality of a radiographic image; - Provide the concepts of radiation protection. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the roles and responsibilities of dental assistants in dental imaging; - Identify x-ray equipment and discuss in basic terms how it works; - Discuss the concepts of X-ray generation, processing and storage of dental images; - List different views commonly used in dentistry; - Identify basic anatomical features and orientations on radiographs; - Assess the quality of a radiograph; - Discuss the concepts of radiation protection; - Discuss techniques of assisting the operator during radiography. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify and describe different X-ray equipment used in dental practice; - Prepare the patient and the surroundings for X-ray exposure; - Process and store dental radiographs; - Identify and correctly mount different radiographic views; - Carry out a clinical audit on the quality of the images; - Enforce radiation protection for the patient and all members of the Dental Team.
