DESCRIPTION | This study-unit introduces students to the basic knowledge of common diseases in medicine and surgery and their mechanism, clinical features, management and prevention. The oral manifestations of these diseases will also be discussed. The unit also offers students an introduction to care in an emergency situation. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims at: - providing an introduction to diseases of the human body. - facilitating the understanding of the impact of disease on basic body function. - facilitating familiarisation with medical terminology. - providing an understanding of the dental technologist's role and responsibilities in professional health care settings. - providing knowledge of common medicines involved in treatment of medical diseases. - providing knowledge of basic life support. - developing a professional identity in the dental care team. - providing an understanding foundation for implementing a holistic approach to patient care. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - understand and appreciate the roles and responsibilities of dental technologist practicing in various clinical and community settings. - discuss basic patho-physiology of common medical and surgical diseases. - understand investigations and treatment of common medical and surgical diseases. - discuss the impact of disease on dental care. - discuss the principles of Basic Life Support. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will: - have the ability to describe common diseases and their effect on general well being. - have the ability to explain the impact of medical diseases on oral health. - be able to perform basic life support.
