DESCRIPTION | This study-unit encompasses theoretical and clinical aspects of medicine and surgery and pharmacology of importance to dental students. It consists of formal lectures as well as ward rounds in medical and surgical wards with particular reference to the diagnosis and understanding of the pathological basis of disease, its clinical manifestations, principles of diagnosis and relevant management including special investigations. Clinical sessions with particular reference to the taking of venous blood, cannulation and experience in accident and emergency departments will also be undertaken. Management of medical emergencies that may arise in the dental surgery including the principles of patient resuscitation. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to focus on: - The pathological basis of disease; - The signs and symptoms of disease; - Medical and surgical conditions to the management of the dental patient; - Methods available to diagnose disease and basic management; - The mode of action of drugs in the management of systemic and dental disease; - Identify and manage medical emergencies. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Take a clear history from patients; - Describe the process of clinical examination of patients; - Explain disease processes affecting patients; - Explain the relevance of disease to dental patients; - Discuss the indications, contra-indications and side effects of drugs together with their mode of action; - Discuss the importance of prevention and management of medical emergencies in dental practice; - Describe the purpose of the Emergency Medical ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ (EMS) system; - Explain how to contact EMS; - List and explain the use of items and drugs found in a medical emergencies kit in a dental practice; - List and describe the guidelines and protocols to follow in medical emergencies. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Take a thorough clinical history; - Carry out a basic examination of patients including auscultation, palpation and percussion; - Take samples of venous blood; - Insert intravenous cannulae; - Manage patients; - Refer patients if necessary; - Demonstrate the basic life support (BLS) protocol and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); - Demonstrate the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED); - Demonstrate the use of basic airway management and ventilation adjuncts; - Identify and manage medical emergencies. ADDITIONAL NOTES | A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for DNS3107. Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. In order for students to be awarded an overall pass in the study-unit, they need to satisfy the following conditions: • obtain an overall pass in the Oral Examination and Clinical Assessment; and • obtain an overall pass in the Logbook and Written Examination. |
