DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to deliver further knowledge in Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology. It consists of formal lectures, tutorials and sessions with patients in the clinical setting. This study-unit covers tumours and fibro-osseous lesions, mucosal lesions, conditions affecting the maxillary sinus and temporomandibular joint, oral radiology techniques including extra-oral imaging, and oral surgical techniques for the management of impacted and fractured teeth, and maxillary sinus. Students will be expected to keep a logbook of procedures and visits to the pathology laboratory and Oral Surgery department. These shall include: - 10 complete medical histories, extraoral and intraoral examination and diagnostic tests (when necessary) of oral medicine patients; - 40 extractions; - 2 visits to pathology; - 2 general anesthesia sessions. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit will allow the student to: • Be able to diagnose and manage systemic disorders that manifest themselves in the oral cavity; • Have a knowledge of the radiographic manifestations of conditions that effect the jaws; • Be proficient in the principles and techniques of minor oral surgical procedures. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: A. Cysts of the jaws and head and neck region • Classify cysts of the jaws; • Describe current views on their pathogenesis; • Explain their clinical, radiological and histopathological features; • Discuss the principles of management and expected behaviour. B. Odontogenic tumours and fibro-osseous lesions • Discuss odontogenic tumours, fibro-osseous lesions and of other bone tumours; • Classify odontogenic tumours and of fibro-osseous lesions; • Discuss current views on their pathogenesis; • Outline their clinical, radiological and histopathological features; • Discuss the principles of management and expected behaviour; • Describe the more common bone tumours that occur in the jaws. C. Lesions of the oral mucosa • Discuss the more common lesions that occur in the oral mucosa; • Describe the clinical presentations of oral mucosal diseases and the investigations required to reach a diagnosis; • Explain the principles of pathology, immunology and microbiology relevant to oral mucosal disease; • Discuss the management of oral mucosal lesions including when to refer; • Describe the pathology of malignancy and the principles of cancer therapy relevant to oral malignancy. D. Oral Radiology • Explain the principles and practice of interpretation; • List the guidelines on making a radiological differential diagnosis; • Report on films- methods and conventions; • Describe the following fundamentals of radiological anatomy:     - Teeth and periodontium;     - Describe Jaws and facial bones;     - Soft tissue shadows and air spaces; • Pathology:     - Define fundamental terms;     - Describe radiological terms;     - Explain developmental abnormalities;     - Explain cysts of the jaws;     - Discuss differential diagnosis of radiolucent lesions;     - Describe tumours of the jaws;     - Describe fibro-osseous lesions;     - Discuss diseases of the paranasal sinuses. E. Oral Surgery • Describe basic principles of oral surgery, including flap design and elevation, biopsies (excisional and incisional); • Discuss the management of odontogenic infections; • Explain the management of complicated extractions and impacted teeth; • Explain the surgical management of periapical pathology; • Discuss the principles of surgical orthodontics; • Explain the surgical management of odontogenic cysts; • Discuss the management of oro-facial pain; • Describe the management of maxillary sinus disorders; • Describe the management of Temporomandibular joint disorders. • Explain the basic principles of sedation as a tool for the for dental procedures. F. Pharmacotherapy • Describe the different therapies available for the treatment of oral mucosal lesions; • Discuss the different pharmacological therapies used in surgical procedures; • Describe the interactions of the different pharmacological therapies used in the dental procedures. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Take a history from patients; • Recognise signs and symptoms of disease; • Explain the pathology behind disease processes affecting the head and neck; • Manage these conditions in the clinical setting and refer when necessary; • Identify disorders of the oral mucosa, including malignant and potentially malignant lesions; • Manage at a primary care level disorders of the oral mucosa, including malignant and potentially malignant lesions; • Use the different pharmacotherapies to manage the common disorders of the oral mucosa and surgical procedures in a clinical setting.
