DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide the student to further exposure and training in clinical assistant skills in the various fields of Dentistry, either within the University Teaching Clinics or alternative sites as deemed necessary by the Faculty. Attendance to all practical, laboratory and clinical sessions is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 92% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are to allow the students: - To practice in clinical assistance in the various disciplines in Dentistry; - To reinforce their function as part of the Dental Team and their obligation to ensure the welfare of the patient. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Discuss his/her duties as an integral member of the Dental Team. Discuss the techniques and procedures in terms of: - dental assisting associated with the various disciplines of Dentistry; - good infection control practice; - the handling and mixing of dental materials; - the maintenance of equipment and the dental unit. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients, other members of the Dental Team and health professionals. Carry out: - preparation of the operatory area; - infection control procedures; - provision to the dentist/student of instruments and equipment; - maintenance of instruments and equipment; - chair-side assisting including preparation of materials; - charting and recording of findings from oral examinations; - processing of dental radiographs; - effective suction of the patient's mouth during treatment; - pouring and trimming of study models; - the construction of mouthguards and simple orthodontic retainers; - the reception of and caring for patients; - stock control and the replenishment of supplies; - appointment making and general office duties; - oral hygiene and dietary advice to the patients.
