DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is available during the summer period and attendance is compulsory. The student will be exposed to dental laboratory sessions in the various fields of prosthetic Dentistry, within the University Dental laboratory or alterative sites as deemed necessary by the Faculty. Official timetables will be customized according to the project availability and also to the class's requirements. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit is to expose students to dental laboratory practice in Dentistry. It will consolidate the technical training in complete denture fabrication as well as introduce the student to the fabrication of acrylic partial dentures. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the fabrication of complete dentures. - Describe the fabrication of acrylic partial dentures. - Explain the use of a dental surveyor. - Explain principles of handling of dental materials. - Discuss procedures in the dental laboratory. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Perform the laboratory steps in the fabrication of complete dentures. - Perform the laboratory steps in the fabrication of acrylic partial dentures. - Use a dental surveyor to survey a dental model. - Handle dental materials used in the dental laboratory. |

ADDITIONAL NOTES | Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. This study-unit is assessed on a Pass/Fail basis. |
