DESCRIPTION | In this study-unit, the student learns the different techniques associated with restoring the damaged tooth with single unit prostheses. In this unit, the student is expected to carve any tooth in wax and cast it in metal alloys. Porcelain work is also introduced and the student is expected to be able to construct a veneered single crown with a metal sub structure. Temporary acrylic crowns will also be constructed by the student. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are to prepare the student to: - Construct single tooth temporary prostheses; - Construct single tooth final prostheses in metal alloy, porcelain fused to metal alloy and all ceramic materials; - Understand the importance of occlusion when new fixed prostheses are introduced in the mouth. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the technical aspects involved in the fabrication of single tooth temporary prostheses; - Discuss the technical aspects involved in the the fabrication of single tooth final prostheses in the various dental materials available; - Discuss the importance of occlusion when new fixed prostheses are introduced in the mouth. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Construct temporary crowns; - Construct a complete metal alloy crown; - Construct a porcelain fused to metal alloy crown; - Construct an all-ceramic crown; - Carve wax crowns in preparation for scanning and milling. |

ADDITIONAL NOTES | Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. | ||||||||||||
