DESCRIPTION | In this study-unit, the student learns the different techniques associated with replacing missing teeth with conventional and implant-supported fixed prostheses. In this unit, the student is expected to carve a bridge in wax and cast it in metal alloy or an alternative material and to veneer it with porcelain. Additionally the student will restore an implant supported prosthesis to replace a missing tooth. Temporary acrylic bridges will also be constructed by the student. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are to prepare the student to: - Construct multi-unit temporary prostheses; - Construct multi-unit final fixed prostheses in metal alloy and porcelain fused to metal alloy materials; - Understand the importance of occlusion when new fixed prostheses are introduced in the mouth. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss the technical aspects involved in the fabrication of multi-unit temporary prostheses; - Discuss the technical aspects involved in the the fabrication of multi-unit fixed prostheses in the various dental materials available; - Discuss the importance of occlusion when new fixed prostheses are introduced in the mouth. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Construct temporary bridges; - Construct a complete implant supported single unit prosthesis; - Construct a porcelain fused to metal alloy fixed prosthesis; - Carve wax bridges in preparation for scanning and milling. |
