DESCRIPTION This study-unit complements the clinical component of the postgraduate dental hygienist in Gerodontology. These seminars are meant to broaden the knowledge of the postgraduate dental hygienist.

In this study-unit, students’ will document their clinical cases in an evidence-based portfolio covering the whole academic year. They will also be required to attend and present a series of seminars in which he/she will be exposed to different clinical scenarios encountered during their clinical practice.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to develop and enhance clinical decision making skills to support safe practice across various dental health settings and with different older adult patient populations presenting with diverse health issues. This study unit will also equip the students with the necessary skills to integrate the best available evidence from research with expertise in dental hygiene clinical practice and oral health education for the benefit of the clients.

It serves as a guide to decision-making in practice:

- Assess situations encountered in the students' clinical practice;
- Access information;
- Explain phenomena;
- Predict outcomes;
- Re-evaluate and advance dental hygiene services;
- Collaborate with dental surgeons and other health professionals in providing quality health care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify clinical problems/oral health education misconceptions and define viable questions;
- Apply the appraised evidence to practice;
- Outline possible barriers to the implementation of this evidence-based approach to dentistry;

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify clinical problems/oral health education misconceptions;
- Apply the appraised evidence to practice;
- Explain possible barriers to the implementation of this evidence based approach to dentistry;
- Document effectively experiences, issues, ideas and reflections in a portfolio;
- Access resources to facilitate clinical decision making skills in order to prepare for return to a practice setting wherein diverse forms of knowledge and decision making skills are required to provide quality dental health care;
- Perform evidence based decisions and practice during their clinical practice.
