DEPARTMENT | Faculty of Dental Surgery | ||||||||
DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is available during the year and summer period. Its attendance is compulsory. The student will be further exposed to dental laboratory sessions in the various fields of conventional and digital prosthetic dentistry using different modalities of computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), such as milling of metal, zirconia, ceramic materials and resin, as well as 3D-printing of resin and filaments, within the University Dental laboratory or alternative sites as deemed necessary by the Faculty. Study-Unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit is to further expose students from a dental technology background to dental laboratory practice and techniques associated with digital dentistry and its applications to the various disciplines in dentistry. It will focus on computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) methodologies and materials. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss available materials and methods, such as milling of titanium, zirconia, ceramic materials and resin, as well as 3D-printing of resin and filaments, and their applications to produce computer-aided design/computer-aided manufactured (CAD-CAM) dental appliances, such as prosthesis, occlusal splints and surgical guides. - Discuss the impact of technological development in CAD-CAM science. - Discuss updated digital dentistry techniques utilized in the various disciplines in dentistry. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Handle diverse CAD-CAM dental materials. - Operate CAD-CAM devices used in the dental laboratory. - Fabricate computer-aided designed/computer aided-manufactured (CAD-CAM) dental prostheses and dental appliances. |
