DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the students to the Laboratory workflow related to the field of Digital Dentistry. It will offer knowledge on the computer-aided design/computer aided-manufacturing (CAD/CAM) modalities used in dental laboratories, such as desktop scanners, 3D-printers and milling devices. Related topics covered also include review of conventional dental laboratory workflows, and working with software dedicated for dental laboratories.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are to:

- Explore the different CAD/CAM modalities in dental laboratories.
- Discuss file types and the use of software dedicated for laboratories.
- Review conventional dental laboratory workflows.
- Provide an overview on how to incorporate digital dentistry in dental laboratories workflows.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the main laboratory applications of CAD-CAM methods in dentistry. This includes speficially extraoral scanning of dental casts and conventional impressions, as well as milling and 3D-printing methodologies.
- Provide an overview of the software dedicated to digital dentistry in the dental laboratories.
- Discuss how to choose and work with computer software dedicated for dental laboratories.
- Discuss the integration of digital dentistry in conventional laboratory workflows.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the best laboratory techniques for a clinical case to benefit from CAD-CAM technology.
- Open, import and superimpose different types of files in dental laboratory software systems.
- Conduct a general digital laboratory workflow for oral rehabilitation cases.
- Work within a multidisciplinary team.
