CODE ECL5054

TITLE Dissertation

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 30

DEPARTMENT European and Comparative Law

DESCRIPTION The dissertation should be done under the supervision of a member of the teaching staff. The dissertation, which should not be less than 15,000 and not more than 20,000 words, will be expected to involve original research and to demonstrate a close linkage with the material covered in core or elective study-units. The topic is to be selected by the participant and approved by the Faculty.

The dissertation must demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of the relevant literature and an ability to engage in critical analysis. More credit will be given for originality and evidence of independent thinking, whether in terms of the material used, or the manner in which it is presented. Merely rehearsing familiar arguments or reproducing material available in existing publications will be less valued and be rewarded with a lower grade.

Those participants following course on a full-time basis must submit the dissertation not later than three months after the completing the May/June Examinations. Part-timers should submit their dissertation not later than three months after May/June Examinations in the Second year of their Course. The Board may in its discretion grant a candidate an extension of the submission date up to a maximum of six months.

When submitting the dissertation a student must submit three softbound copies of their dissertation.

N.B. On submission of the dissertation the student should also present a copy of the receipt of the examination fees as stipulated by the University which should be paid at the cash office at the Finance Department at the Administration Building. The supervisor may be asked to make any necessary comments he or she would like to say regarding the work, effort and progress of the student.

The dissertation will not be accepted if these regulations are ignored.

After the dissertation report is submitted by the three Examiners a candidate will be asked to submit FOUR copies of the dissertation, TWO of which should be softbound and the remaining TWO should be bound in a BLACK HARD COVER with gold lettering. Two copies of the dissertation should be also presented in electronic format therefore we would also require these to be copied onto a Compact Disc. On the disc please stick a label or place the compact disc in a neat cover, write your name and surname, your course, the year you are going to graduate and if possible your dissertation title for easier reference.

In the case of the hardbound copies the title of the dissertation should be written on the spine and on the front cover of the dissertation. The name of student, name of course, month and year of graduation should be written underneath each other on the right hand side at the bottom of the dissertation and on the spine of the dissertation. Also, in one of the hardbound copies a student must include a signed letter declaring that the dissertation is his or her original work.

[N.B. Not all subjects may be offered, although every attempt will be made to do so. Additional subjects may also be offered. At application stage, applicants should indicate their areas of interest.]
