DESCRIPTION | The labour market is a significant institution in any type of economy. Labour is one of the main resources within an effective economy. The analysis follows demand/supply considerations, but also delves into the returns to education, discrimination, labour mobility, unemployment, labour unions, and labour market policies. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to introduce students to a rigorous economic analysis of the role labour plays in the economy. It provides regression analysis of returns to educational investments, risk and incentives resulting in wage differentials. By the end of this study-unit, students should be able to apply theoretical models to analyze economic issues related with labour market policies, unionization, and migration. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - understand the impact of labour market policies on the economy; - appreciate the importance of utilizing all available resources in an economy; - comprehend the value of labour market institutions to reach equilibrium. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - analyse the impact of education on the labour market and the economy; - use economic models to evaluate policy decisions which increase the economic value of labour; - verify theoretical predictions through empirical investigation.
