DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces student teachers to the relation between becoming a professional teacher and researcher in education. It focuses on the importance of doing educational research and the various research methods that can be used for their research project. The study-unit also covers issues related to research ethics and procedures. The later part of the study-unit will introduce students to matters related to children’s protection, health and safety policies. During the first part of this study-unit, students will be introduced to research epistemologies, research methodologies and design. After a general introduction to qualitative, quantitative research methods, philosophical inquiry in education and pedagogical project-based research, students will be presented with elective components, to engage more practically in the specific strategies. A choice from philosophical inquiry, case study research, observations, interviews with individuals and groups, surveys, questionnaires and quantitative analysis, action research, pedagogical project-based research, mixed research methods amongst others, will be offered. Issues related to general research ethical obligations will be discussed, as well as guidelines in writing a research proposal.

The second part of the study-unit will focus on the legal aspects of child protection and mandatory reporting, children’s rights and anti-discrimination procedures, together with health and safety policies with regards to children.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Sensitize students towards their professional obligation to contribute to and conduct research which has educational aims;
- Inquire into the epistemological, methodological and ethical issues in doing educational research;
- Introduce student teachers to research methods and approaches that inform their research practice;
- Acquire specific knowledge of the various methods on how to conduct research;
- Reflect on the ethics of doing research that is grounded in practice, focusing in particular on doing research in schools and doing research with children;
- Acquire knowledge about the legal aspects of child protection, children’s rights and health and safety policies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify knowledge on being a professional teacher in relation to doing research as a teacher;
- Explain the use of various approaches and methods in doing research in education, including doing a literature review, philosophical inquiry, qualitative and quantitative research, pedagogical and project-based research;
- Describe the ethical aspects and procedures in doing educational research;
- Explain the legal aspects of child protection, children’s rights and policies about the health and safety of children.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate the epistemological and methodological approaches in educational research;
- Appraise various research methods, processes and procedures;
- Sketch questions of the research study in relation to the appropriate methods of research;
- Illustrate the importance of child protection, children’s rights and health and safety issues for children.
