DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of two parts.

The first part aims to enhance student teachers’ skills in reading and writing in order to support them during the later phase of the dissertation. A It engages them in reading texts in a critical manner. This leads to an explanation on how writing itself is a method of inquiry that involves clear presentation and articulation of ideas and arguments for the justification for positions and decisions taken by researchers with respect to research methodologies, methods, research design analyses and conclusions.

The second part of this study-unit engages student teachers in reflections about the teaching profession, and what it means to act ethically and responsibly as a teacher. Case studies will be used to encourage student teachers reflect and evaluate professional actions regarding teacher relations with students, parents, culturally diverse families and schools’ members of staff.
Good practices for teachers in dealing with children at risk of mental illness, substance abuse, and extremism will be provided. Highlight teachers responsibilities.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Identify approaches and strategies for reading texts critically;
- Develop clear, descriptive and argumentative writing;
- Initiate students into the process of reporting research results and publication;
- Illustrate ways of developing professional, just and ethical relations with others as teachers.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the importance of academic reading and writing;
- Recognise the factors that make teaching a profession;
- Describe professional conduct in relating to others whilst teaching;
- Identify good practices in supporting children at risk;
- Identify teachers’ responsibilities in maintaining standards in their teaching and research practices.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse important aspects related to professional ethics;
- Read and analyse texts, research reports and research papers in a critical manner;
- Articulate ideas, knowledge and arguments through a clear writing style;
- Discuss ethical and professional issues related to educational contexts in schools and classes;
- Examine their value positions and make professional judgments about situations from case studies in schools;
- Appraise good practices in approaching and supporting children at risk.
