DESCRIPTION Each participant, supported by a tutor, is expected to identify a research question related to promoting access to education for all and develop ways of investigating that question in a rigorous and systematic approach.

Participants are expected to report their research study in a dissertation of 25,000 words that should include a critical review of the relevant literature, a rationale and account of the methodology, and a rigorous analysis of findings.

The whole dissertation should reflect a good understanding and application of ethical standards in research.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit is aimed at enabling participants to develop adequate skills in identifying a research question and critiquing the relevant literature, selecting and applying appropriate research methodologies and analytical strategies, and reporting the outcomes of the research.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate an understanding of the differences between qualitative and quantitative research questions and related methodological approaches;
- Conceptualise a research question within an area study;
- Critically evaluate the literature relevant to a research question;
- Comprehend the importance of rigorous analysis of findings;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale for ethical standards in research.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify a research question
- Critically review the literature relevant to a research question
- Select the appropriate method for investigating a research question
- Apply a research strategy for data collection and analysis in a rigorous and ethical manner;
- Report research findings scientifically, with appropriate attention to validity and reliability
- Relate findings to the existing literature and to potential applications

**September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
