| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will initially go through the historical development of ESD to outline the major stages in the elaboration of the concept. This historical analysis will serve as a backdrop for the local ESD developments. The implications of these developments will be explored on specific examples of ESD initiatives with the aim of identifying examples of good practices at various educational sectors. Study-Unit Aims: (a) To develop a deeper understanding of the main principles of ESD; (b) To develop an awareness of the main milestones of global, regional and local ESD development; (c) To develop an understanding of the characteristics of sound ESD practices. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) identify the principles of ESD; (b) outline the main developments of ESD provision and their impacts on the various educational (i.e. the formal, the non-formal and informal) sectors; (c) summarise the advantages and challenges in the adoption of a whole institution approach to ESD, and; (d) list and discuss the challenges to ESD implementation. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) appraise ESD initiatives at various educational sectors; (b) compare and contrast communication campaigns with educational campaigns; (c) evaluate and critique the impact of ESD initiatives; and; (d) design age-appropriate ESD initiatives.
