DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces participants to the dynamics of leadership and prepares them to take on positions of leadership in organizations. The study-unit adopts a practitioner approach even if grounded in the established and latest thinking on leadership as a discipline. The study-unit incorporates knowledge and skills related to personal development given the necessary link between personality and person qualities and the leadership of an organization.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide a sound understanding of the fundamentals of leadership. As outlined in the Learning Outcomes, the study-unit facilitates learning both on a knowledge front as well as at the level of specific skills.

This study-unit aims to bring forward reflection, discussion and critical evaluation of approaches to leadership in different contexts - with a view to practical real-world application.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. Appraise different leadership styles and approaches and discuss their appropriateness in specific contexts;
b. Recognize and explain different personality traits and personal attributes, and describe their role in leadership;
c. Discuss the main approaches to the management of change and the roles of managers and leaders in that context;
d. Demonstrate awareness of the movement from management to leadership, especially in the context of the global and societal environments in which organizations function;
e. Discuss and analyze the links between strategic leadership, innovation and organizational change;
f. Analyse effective ways to facilitate and lead team tasks.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. Develop a personal improvement plan with clear objectives and actions aimed at addressing personal attributes that are important for leadership;
b. Apply principles and tactics of effective interpersonal communication in different contexts;
c. Practice conflict resolution and problem solving approaches to provided situations;
d. Demonstrate negotiation and meeting management skills through activities and role-play.
