DESCRIPTION | This study-unit enables students to develop an understanding of environmental governance, with a particular emphasis on understanding the role of governance, policy and law for environmental protection and sustainability. Students will first be introduced to the concept of governance, and to fundamental principles of good governance and their application in environmental fields. The study-unit will then take an in-depth look at environmental policy and law, with a general introduction to the history, sources and principles of law and policy followed by a thematic analysis of policy and law instruments in a variety of fields relevant to Earth Systems, including biodiversity, freshwater, marine environments, air quality, waste, and energy. Each of these will be discussed at global, European and national levels. Environmental compliance mechanisms will also be discussed. The study-unit will also include panel discussions with guest speakers, including from local regulatory authorities. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims: - To provide students with a broad-based understanding of environmental policy and law; - To develop students' awareness of the key actors and policy/law processes that shape environmental protection and sustainability matters at local, national and international levels; - To familiarize students with key international policy and law instruments in a variety of fields relevant to Earth Systems. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify fundamental principles of good governance; - Describe the relationship between European and national decision-making processes and structures; - Identify main international and national policy and legal instruments in various fields relevant to Earth Systems. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Assess and evaluate the science-policy interface; - Apply basic principles of governance, policy and law for the day-to-day requirements of environmental and planning agencies; - Appraise the effectiveness of existing policy and legal instruments. ADDITIONAL NOTES | Attendance to scheduled sessions (lectures, field work, seminar, laboratory sessions and any other teaching session in whatever mode) is obligatory and only students having a satisfactory attendance will be assessed in the study-unit.
