DESCRIPTION Students will normally present a dissertation proposal to the Board of Studies towards the end of the second semester of the programme. This should detail: a working title; a statement on the focus and broad scope of the proposed research; reasonably detailed information on appropriate primary and secondary literature; indications about the anticipated structure of the dissertation and relevant critical approaches. Subject to adequate supervision provision being available, students will be allowed to focus on any body of work or any critical issue that is broadly related to English Literary Studies, but will be expected to eventually submit a well-focused study that they will work on in consultation with a designated tutor. Comparative work between earlier and post-1890 literature and/or criticism is also acceptable.

The dissertation should be approximately 20000 words long (excluding footnotes and List of Works Cited).

Objective

The purpose of the dissertation is allow students to conduct closely focused and appropriately supervised research in an area related to English Literary Studies.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To familiarise students with the requirements of sustained and in-depth postgraduate research;
- To carry out research into an appropriate topic and develop a thesis;
- To acquire scholarly mastery over a focused area of English Literary Studies;
- To write a postgraduate dissertation that is well-researched, conceptually sound, and persuasive;
- To be more creative and critical thinkers.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss in an authoritative and critically informed way their chosen area of focus;
- Critically situate their research in the broader context of Literary Studies in English.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate and deploy appropriate critical methodologies;
- Conduct well-sourced and appropriately focused research;
- Discuss critically and write persuasively about their chosen area of focus.
