DESCRIPTION The study-unit provides a learning opportunity for students to engage with a wide range of research methodologies, key concepts and theories, and professional skills in research training at postgraduate level. It eases the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study. It offers an all-round preparation programme, with a specific focus on:
- identifying valid areas of study and developing a research and writing plan;
- doing research effectively online, through bibliographic databases, in libraries, and in archives;
- processing and giving feedback;
- formatting and proofreading writing to high academic standard;
- presenting research in public;
- organising academic events, including symposia, roundtables, and conferences;
- writing for journals;
- publishing in different media platforms;
- preparing for doctoral level studies.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To enhance students’ skills in research, reading critically, writing, processing feedback at postgraduate level;
- To consolidate their abilities to manage data, formulate research proposals, abstracts, papers, presentations;
- To train students in all aspects of dissertation writing and prepare them for academic publication;
- To prepare students for conference participation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate an understanding of the breadth of research already undertaken in their research area and identify gaps in that research;
- Plan and structure a dissertation or academic presentation;
- Accurately use referencing systems including MHRA and MLA;
- Think critically about writing;
- Plan academic symposia and conferences;
- Discuss and think through research in public.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Plan and structure their own research;
- Write for academic purposes;
- Edit and proofread academically;
- Organise and present at academic symposia, roundtables, conferences.
