DESCRIPTION | Power semiconductor devices, their switching and heat control. - Mosfets, IGBTs, Thyristors - Switching waveforms and snubbers - Heatsink Calculations Basic Power electronic circuit topologies Single-Phase Rectifier Circuits: uncontrolled and controlled rectifiers Three-Phase Rectifier Circuits: uncontrolled and controlled recitifiers Switch-mode DC / DC converters Study-unit Aims: - To provide theoretical background for the analysis of power electronic circuits and to introduce simulation as a design tool of power electronic circuits. - Covers fundamental principles of circuits used in regulated switch-mode power supplies as well as circuits used in industrial dc drives. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain operation of basic rectifier and switch-mode converter circuits assuming ideal power devices: modes of operation, equivalent circuits per mode, voltage and current waveforms; - Understand basic principles of power semiconductor device construction; - Explain basic transient characteristics of power semiconductor devices; - Explain and analyse power loss mechanisms in power semiconductor devices based on first-order models. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design basic stages of regulated switch-mode power supplies; - Predict approximate power loss of semiconductor devices and select suitable value of heatsink thermal resistance; - Use PLECS package (blocksets for Simulink) for simulation of power electronic circuits. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - Mohan, Undeland, Robins, "Power Electronics Converters, Application, and Design". |
