Study-Unit Description

CODE EPC5111

TITLE Renewable Energy Technologies - Electrical

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Electrical Engineering

DESCRIPTION This study unit will give an overview of various RES technologies for electricity generation (and heating/cooling).There will also be an in-depth analysis of electrical design aspects of Solar Photovoltaics, Wind energy, Power Converters for Distributed generation, Grid Integration, Energy Storage and the Basics of CHP. The material issues and manufacture of photovoltaics will also be studied.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this module is to give the students an understanding of renewable energy systems and the electrical energy conversion required in order to integrate such sources on the electrical grid. The unit also aims to introduce the students to energy storage solutions that might allow further integration of renewable energy on the grid. It will also familiarize the student with the materials used in and the manufacturing process of photovoltaics

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- explain the operation of various renewable energy systems including photovoltaic, wind and CHP;
- describe the electrical energy conversion requirements to interface renewable energy sources to the grid
- compare the operation of converters that convert the renewable energy into a form acceptable by the grid;
- explain the role and the form of energy storage for increasing the integration of renewable energy.
- describe the manufacturing process of solar cells.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- distinguish between the requirements of different renewable energy sources enabling them to take informative decisions on the most appropriate technology for the problem's application;
- design and/or select appropriate converters;
- select appropriate energy storage to increase the percentage renewable energy on the grid
