DESCRIPTION | The study-unit focuses on the teaching and learning of Physical Education and Movement together with other Health associated aspects. The physical education components are divided into FOUR main areas of: Knowledge, Physical Literacy and Motor skill development; Learning Outcomes in Primary PE; Challenges in teaching PE in primary; and Management and Pedagogy of Teaching PE in the primary settings. These are as follows: - Active time in children and local research - What is Physical Literacy? - What are Motor skills and what is their need? - LTAD and the FUNdamental stage of learning - Fundamental motor skills practical workshop. Each of these areas of learning is presented through a number of themes and topics which are unpacked in lectures and discussions across the study-unit. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at providing students with a good awareness about, and understanding of, the below concepts related to Physical Literacy, Motor skill development and need, the primary PE learning outcomes and Management and Pedagogy in PE. This study-unit will also prepare students to promote a healthy school environment, to nurture health literate children, and to implement Health, Food and Nutrition Education activities within the Primary school setting. It will up-date and strengthen the students' health knowledge which is required as background information for the Primary teacher and to form the basis for planning a variety of learning activities. Topics covered will include: dimensions of health; issues in childhood health, such as common childhood ailments and conditions; children鈥檚 nutritional needs; personal and food hygiene; safety inside and outside the classroom. This study-unit will also familiarise students with the cross-curricular approach to implementing Health, Food and Nutrition Education in the Primary classroom. Planning and implementing developmentally-appropriate and culturally-sensitive health-related learning activities will be practiced, with an emphasis on healthy sustainable eating. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Recognise the essential needs of developing Physically Literate children by exposing young children to a variety of motor skills across their educational journey; - Define Physical Literacy and Motor skill learning; - Critique, plan and design lessons informed by challenges experienced and faced by the local PE teacher in the primary schools; - Identify the needs for increasing physical activity time in primary education; - Analyse the different dimensions of health; - Interpret their personal perception of good health; - Investigate the features of a health-promoting school and various local school health policies; - Distinguish and describe common childhood ailments or conditions; their prevention, symptoms and treatment. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Develop appropriate activities and games which emphasise motor skill development across workshops and practical sessions carried out as part of the course; - Develop and produce schemes of work and lesson plans suitable to teach PE; - Critically analyse a PE lesson following criteria related to class management and pedagogy; - Advocate for a multi-dimensioanal orientation of PE and how these dimensions are transferabble to other areas of learning; - Critically analyse available print and online Health, Food and Nutrition education resources for cultural sensitivity and developmental suitability, as well as potential for use cross-curricularly in the Maltese Primary school setting; - Develop appropriate Learning Plans for specific health, food and nutrition topics; - Produce healthy, tasty, low-cost snacks suitable for food preparation/ cooking learning activities with young children; - Advocate for health-promoting school environments.
