DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended for Non Maltese students who are required to communicate in Maltese in their prospective field placement. Students will develop their reading, speaking and writing skills in Maltese. They will be trained to use basic, technical and specific words, simple and more complicated sentences and the most common expressions in Maltese as well as abstract expressions and idioms, that are used in everyday life, including how to communicate well in Maltese with adults and children.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to help students function well in a Maltese school setting. This will be achieved by equipping students with the ability to listen, read and understand simple and complex sentences, in Maltese. Students will also be able to understand the main ideas of a complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in the field of education.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Obtain knowledge about the sentence structure in Maltese and its intonation;
- Become familiar with the grammatical structures of Maltese: verbs, nouns, prepositions, adjectives, and so on;
- Explain and describe the cultural components in everyday communication;
- Deliver oral and written presentations.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Communicate well and understand sentences and expressions that are often used in school and education;
- Describe some experiences and aspects of their past; the physical, social and cultural environment around them and issues related to their needs;
- Describe experiences, events, wishes and aspirations, and briefly justify their views, or explain their plans;
- Answer and ask questions in Maltese;
- Use pronouns;
- Conjugate the Mamma (the basic verb in Maltese) in imperfective and perfective aspects;
- Fill in a form with personal details;
- Write a formal, informal and electronic letter;
- Write a message and notice;
- Write a report;
- Write words, sentences and phrases related to school life and the field of education;
- Use a few adjectives in the singular, plural, comparative and superlative forms;
- Use Collective, Singular, and Plural nouns;
- Read and understand sentences and texts.
