DESCRIPTION Over the past decade, migration has been one of the most prominent issues on the political agenda of the European Union and its member states. Notably, it has reshaped Europe鈥檚 political landscape, with populist parties surging across the continent, challenging both the human right of asylum as well as EU citizens鈥 right to move and reside freely within the EU. Several member states have been accused of violating national, European, and international legal obligations in their efforts to deter migrants from entering their territory. At the same time, with a growing number of member states invoking their right to temporarily reintroduce internal border checks, the principle of free movement within the Schengen area is increasingly eroded. Against that backdrop, the EU has revised its legal and administrative frameworks, reinforced its external borders, and intensified cooperation with third countries.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit analyses how EU legislation on migration and asylum is made and implemented. It examines relevant European and international legal frameworks as well as the actors and institutions that design and implement them. In doing so, it puts particular attention on the Mediterranean region and several migration 鈥渃rises鈥 and their implications. Moreover, the study-unit zooms in on the situation for migrants who attempt to reach Europe through irregular routes, exploring the humanitarian, legal, and political challenges they face along the way. The course also investigates the externalisation of EU migration policy, the role of third countries, and the broader implications for human rights and international protection standards. Combining legal and political perspectives, the study-unit helps students to understand how migration and asylum are governed in the EU and how its policies shape - and are shaped by - broader geopolitical and societal dynamics.
