TITLE Seminar: Issues in Biblical Church Pronouncements and Teachings

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will take into account the role of the Bible in the life of the Christian community since its beginning. The Scriptures were written in communities in faith by inspired authors.
The study-unit will outline several important Church documents on Scripture in the life and mission of the Church, such as "Providentissimus Deus" (1893), "Divino Afflante Spiritu"(1943), "Dei Verbum" (1965), "The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church" (1993) and "Verbum Domini" (2010).

Study-Unit Aims:

(1) The presentation of the main Church documents on Scripture, its centrality and the proper approach of the Christian community to the biblical text;
(2) The outlining of the progressive development of the Church's Magisterium on various aspects related to Scripture;
(3) The closer reading of the Magisterial texts on this theme.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) Grasp the main highlights of the documents of the Magisterium on Sacred Scripture;
(b) Follow and measure the linear development of the Magisterium on the mentioned documents, and the latter's relationship to the concurrent openings afforded by the development of biblical studies;
(c) Discuss the issues which arose over the ages with regard to the Bible and its proper authentic interpretation in and by the ecclesial community;
(d) Compose a list of over-arching themes on the use of Scripture in the Magisterium.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

(a) Read with profit a particular text of the Magisterium on Sacred Scripture within its specific context (e.g. late 19th century, or post-Vatican Council II);
(b) Be conversant on the theme of the role of the Bible in the Church;
(c) Present a Church document and engage onself in discussion with fellow students on that theme.
