| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will explore the relationship between Scripture and Theology. In what sense does the Church believe that the Bible is the Word of God? Moreover, which are the salient theological underpinnings in Scripture? Taking cue from Dei Verbum, this study-unit intends to examine thematic approaches including the word of God in history; the transmission of the word of God; the relationship between tradition-Scripture-canon; scriptural inspiration; scriptural tradition and modernity, the theology of tradition and the use of scripture in ecumenical dialogue. It also seeks to provide insight into the relationship between the study of theological and social-religious issues and the actual social context which is characterized by religious and ethical plurality and a multiplicity of fundamental life options. Study-Unit Aims: (a) Develop critical awareness of the potentials and limitations of Scripture as a resource for Theology; (b) Show how Scripture can be relevant for contemporary questions in Theology and today's world; (c) Get students acquainted with the challenges of reading Scripture in the context of interreligious encounters. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) Synthesise the main features of the documents of the Magisterium on Sacred Scripture; (b) Construct the linear development of the Magisterium on the mentioned documents, and merge them with the concurrent openings afforded by the development of biblical studies; (c) Examine the number of issues which arose over the ages with regard to the Bible and its proper authentic interpretation in and by the ecclesial community. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) Evaluate a particular text of the Magisterium on Sacred Scripture within its specific context; (b) Appraise the theme of the role of the Bible in the Church; (c) Defend Church documents and engage oneself in discussion with fellow students.
