| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit consists of classroom-based lectures and presentations which introduce the students to the application of nutrition and dietetic management of disease states particularly in the hospital setting. Focus will be made on a patient-centered and a multidisciplinary team approach and will link to the practical placements the students will be attending. Study-unit Aims: The unit will provide the student with an opportunity to review key areas in the dietary and associated management of major disorders encountered in practice which include disorders of the liver, biliary tract and exocrine pancreas; disorders of the kidney; disorders of the endocrine system: diabetes mellitus and hypoglycaemia; paediatric disorders: inborn errors of metabolism; cystic fibrosis; neurological disorders; trauma and critical nutrition. Topics in clinical nutrition and nutritional support selected will include specialized feeding using oral, enteral and parenteral routes; strategies and monitoring; exclusion and test diets. The review process will thus provide the student with a knowledge base which is highly relevant and applicable to effective evidence-based clinical practice. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Recognize and understand disease processes encountered in dietetic practice through the sound theoretical knowledge built up during the unit; - Use the competencies gained to link and apply the knowledge to clinical practice work in a multi-disciplinary team and address various clinical areas including dietetic diagnosis and care, and dietary prescription; - Use competencies gained to link and apply sound theoretical knowledge of the various disease processes and their related dietetic treatment of knowledge built up during the unit to clinical practice; - Time, manage and cope with case load planning and apply this to the practical setting. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Dispense dietetic care taking into account individual needs of the client/patient whilst taking into account the management of and specific disease states which requires the involvement of considerable clinical judgment based on evidence presented which will then lead towards the appropriate dietetic management.
