DESCRIPTION | The practical placements are structured, supervised and mentored periods of experiential learning that constitute a sequential learning process that will enable the student to develop the necessary competencies in dietetics to practice professionally and in a safe manner. The placements' design is based on the European Federation Association of Dietitians Academic Standards (EFAD, 2018) and ‘A curriculum framework for the pre-registration education and training of Dietitians’ (BDA, 2020). Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit will further teach and guide the student to apply principles of dietary theory and evidence-based advice to various client groups encountered in common practice (these may include clients afflicted with endocrine, renal, cardiovascular, inflammatory (GIT and general), oncology and other locally significant health issues); - The student will critically evaluate the theoretical basis of communication behavior in the delivery of therapeutic advice and be able to select the appropriate model for changing a clients behavior; - During the placement the student will consolidate competencies to foster the interdisciplinary and intra-disciplinary approach to patient/client management; - The student will further assist in making informed professional judgments relating to all aspects of therapeutic care and preventive practice; - To further refine time and case load management;. Scenarios encountered to reach the unit aims will include: - Collation of client histories in at least two different settings under supervision not previously encountered in Placement 1, 2 and 3; - Assessment of client status and design of dietary plans for cohorts not previously encountered in Placement 1,2 and 3; - Active participation and contribution to Multidisciplinary team meetings. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate principles of patient assessment (including history taking and data collation) manage standard dietary procedures; The student will be able to critically examine the factors known to affect clinical outcome and promote the need for advocacy for appropriate diet and lifestyle; - Have developed the necessary skill-base that supports effective practice in a semi-autonomous manner; - Have learned to practice ethical, and professional behaviour required of a health care professional. This experiential learning will provide the student with the concepts of professional regulation, scope of practice, the importance of maintenance of standards of practice and the skills address concerns and, critique and further develop investigation procedures to the needs of the local context; - Have understood the importance of consolidation of all skills acquired thus far and the need for continuous development to maintain fitness to practice. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply theoretical principles of Dietetics to practical scenarios; practice within the dietetic and wider healthcare team; practice good communication and diplomacy skills needed to effectively manage clients dietetic status; implement time management and self-discipline needed when working with clients; - Manage a personally assigned case load in a semi-autonomous manner having clinical trainers and mentors available for consultation should the need arise. The student is at this stage will be able to: suggest potential action to be taken; - Draft clinical notes required; - Contribute to case discussions; - Draft reports to be given to the referrer.
