| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit deals with research in popular literatures also known as 'paraliteratures' It will focus on literary genres often considered as being outside the literary canon, such as 'bandes dessinées' (i.e. comics), science-fiction, 'polar' (i.e. detective novels) and 'littérature fantastique' (i.e. fantasy). Study-Unit Aims: - To introduce students to the importance of popular literary genres; - To present the main popular literary genres and their evolution through History; - To familiarise students with an analysis of discourse on a specific paraliterary text; - To develop students' ability to understand the differences between a literary and a paraliterary text; - To present examples of popular literary genres. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Recognize the main popular literary genres of a given text and to formulate in detail its characteristics; - Describe the characteristics of an author’s style within a literary genre; - Analyze a popular literary genre. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Carry out an in-depth semiotic analysis of a popular literary text; - Critically apply the theoretical knowledge learned in class to nonliterary discourse.
