DESCRIPTION As the global population ages, the field of Geriatric Medicine becomes increasingly vital. Wellbeing in old age should be the ultimate goal for every practiotioner and researcher in the field of older persons healthcare. Wellbeing in old age is a multifaceted concept encompassing physical, mental and social health. This multifaceted nature of the wellbeing state requires a variety of services provided to the older persons through a well organised healthcare system. In this study-unit, the students will be able to enrich their knowledge about different health challenges faced by the older persons, how do these conditions develop, the preventative measures which could be provided to minimise both the development and the disabilities caused by these conditions and also the current health care services provided for managing these conditions. Every lecture will discuss a different body system and the conditions which commonly affect it as the person ages.

Study-unit Aims:

By enriching the students’ knowledge about the common health conditions at old age, they will be familiar with:

- The components of functional ability, vital capacity and resilience which can help the older persons to remain resilient and feeling well;
- Understand how Frailty may develop at old age and the disability caused by the advancing frailty state;
- The role of multiple diseases (Co-morbidities) in causing Frailty;
- The importance of the comprehensive geriatric assessment in highlighting health deficits and various challenges and setting a personalised care and support plan for every person;
- The importance of an integrated healthcare system to offer services materialising these plans.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Distinguish the common health conditions such as osteoarthritis, parkinsonism, stroke, diabetes, pressure sores and hypertension.
- Identify and compare the management of a number of specific medical problems in old age;
- Appraise the importance of evidence based practice in benchmarking the care process provided for the older persons;

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use approved tools to measure and evaluation the quality of care;
- Assess and recommend the clinical services that can be made available for the care of older persons;
- Develop the required clinical skills to be part of any healthcare team looking after older persons;
- Analyse and interpret interdisciplinary clinical practice;
- Adapt to the team-management system in assessing the health issues of older persons.
