DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to teach basic practical and fashion design techniques. It shall be mostly practical in nature where the basic elements and principles of design are tackled in the light of the various style features found on garments and furnishings. The study-unit focuses on basic techniques used in fashion design and the construction of garments. The emphasis is on basic garment making including the application of the elements and principles of design. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims at expanding the learners' knowledge related to the basic practical and fashion design techniques needed to teach Textiles and Fashion as a vocational subject taught in secondary schools. It shall focus on the basic techniques required to teach fashion design and garment making. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the formal elements and principles of design in textiles and fashion; - Describe and apply basic techniques used in fashion design; - Outline and discuss style features in various fashionable outfits; - Critically analyse style features of current fashionable clothing. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Apply the formal elements and principles of design when creating fashion design sketches and garment samples; - Follow correct sewing procedures when working on garments; - Demonstrate appropriate practical techniques in basic sewing; - Critically assess ready made garments for quality of the techniques used in their construction.
